What we run into in Stafford
Almost everything we're called to in Stafford County is subdivision housing built in the last few decades, on parcels carved out of standing forest. The house is new. The wildlife population around it is not, and it did not move away when the lots were cleared.
Newer construction fails in its own way. Production rooflines come with plastic ridge and box vents, gable vents screened with something light, and roof returns where two planes meet at an angle that never quite closes. None of that is defective — it's just built to keep out weather, not animals. A squirrel only needs one of those junctions to be slightly open.

My house is only fifteen years old. How is anything getting in?
This is the most common question we get in Stafford, and the answer is that new construction is built to keep out weather, not wildlife. Plastic roof vents, lightly screened gable ends and the angle where a roof return meets the wall are all normal, code-compliant details — and all of them are ways in for a determined squirrel.
